Woman in a Nine-tailed Fox Kimono, 1882 by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Woman in a Nine-tailed Fox Kimono, 1882

Comments - Intriguing kabuki print showing a beauty flanked by two samurai. She wears a striking purple kimono with a magical nine-tailed fox over the shoulders and colorful chrysanthemum blossoms. Her hair is pulled back into a low knot trailing over her shoulders, with loose strands framing her face. She reaches from under her robe to adjust a blue and white towel draped over her shoulders. The samurai at left looks up from a letter he is reading, his beautiful kimono depicting an exotic-looking bird perched on a flowering branch, with a crescent moon on one shoulder. The background features a red tie-dyed textile pattern above and what looks like an ink sketch of a pine tree below. In Japanese mythology, foxes have supernatural abilities, and the more tails one has, the older and more powerful it is. A bold design with wonderful detail and lively color.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 1/4"

Condition - Nice color and detail. A few creases and wrinkles.
