Comments - Attractive kabuki scene from the play "Hitokanade Kodakara Soga" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of Iwai Kumesaburo III as the courtesan Segawa of the Matsudaya and Kataoka Gado II as her guest, Arakiya Gokyo, in the beauty's private quarters. She drapes a robe over a folding screen at left, smiling as she looks back over her shoulder, a roll of tissues caught in her mouth. Her kimono is shaded from violet to blue and bordered with square motifs, tied with a black obi that reverses to a red tie-dyed print. Gokyo sits on the bed, watching the beauty with a sullen frown. The folding screen features a landscape with blossoming cherry trees and a flowing river framed by yellow clouds. Nicely detailed.
