Scene from Kozotte kuruwa mimasu no Date-zome, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kozotte kuruwa mimasu no Date-zome" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo of the samurai Sanshichiro Yoshitaka at the foot of a bridge, waiting next to a horse laden with boxes. The village headman Tokuemon kneels beside him, holding a rope tied to the horse, while a group of samurai dressed in matching robes crouches at right. The men look up at him expectantly, some frowning unhappily. The actors include Nakayama Ichizo I as Tokuemon and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Yoshitaka. An intriguing subject with expressive faces and an unusual setting, beautifully detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 1/2"
