Scene from Sono na nomi arigane-zome, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Sono Na Nomi Karigane-zome" of a samurai eavesdropping outside the door to a fabric shop, a strange expression on his face as he clutches a length of rope. Inside, a beauty looks up with a somewhat evil grin as she lounges on the floor, a pipe in one hand and a tobacco set on the floor nearby. The matron at right reacts with alarm, while the clerk below scratches his head in a puzzled manner as he holds an abacus. Shelves stacked with bolts of cloth line the back of the room. The actors include Bando Takesaburo I at left and Bando Shuka I in the center. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting. The first time we've offered this subject.

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 28 5/8" + margins as shown
