Scene from Hakkenden Uwasa no Takadono, circa 1836

Comments - Dramatic scene of Onoe Kikugoro III as the ghosts of Princess Fuse and the dog Yatsufusa in "Hakkenden Uwasa no Takadono" at the Morita Theater in Edo. The Hakkeden tells the story of the Eight Dog Heroes, who were the mystical offspring of a marriage between Princess Fuse and the dog Yatsufusa. Here, the beauty cowers behind her sleeve as the enormous dog snarls behind her, an alarmed expression on her face. A low black lacquer table at right holds scrolls, and a softly shaded scalloped border runs across the top of the page. An unusual subject and a fantastic design.

Artist - Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 15" x 9 3/4"

Condition - Nice detail. Horizontal centerfold, folds at sides. Loss and thinning at edge, repaired. Wrinkling across center and at edges.
