Comments - Great kabuki scene of a confrontation taking place between three men in the woods. At left, the otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei holds out a package in a cloth, sneering angrily as he watches his companions out of the corners of his eyes. A red foxfire flickers above the package, the flame a sign of a supernatural occurrence. In the center, the thief and gang leader Nippon Daemon scowls back at him as he grips his sword upright with both hands. He wears a striking kimono patterned with dragons over armor. At right, the young Shirai Gonpachi, who is wanted for murder, leans forward, ready to spring into action. Vines wind around the stone lanterns in front of the tree trunks. From left, the actors are Seki Sanjuro III, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. A handsome design with a striking setting.

Condition - Good detail. Thinning along vertical fold, a few losses and wormholes, repaired. Wrinkling at side and corner, a few creases at edges.
