Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
The Two Brushes Tokaido - Between 1855 and 1857, Hiroshige and Kunisada collaborated on a series known as the "Two Brushes Tokaido." The upper portion of each print features a landscape view of the station by Hiroshige, with Kunisada contributing the large figures below. The scenes include travelers and workers along this famed route, characters from myth and legend, and kabuki actors. The series includes 55 designs, comprising each of the 53 stations plus the starting point, Nihonbashi, and the ending point, Kyoto. These attractive designs are beautifully printed, with soft bokashi shading in the landscapes, and fine line work in the figures and clothing. An interesting complement to Hiroshige's more well-known Tokaido series.
Shirasuka: Panoramic View of Shiomizaka, 1855 - Intriguing image of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the folk hero Jiraiya sitting in a palanquin during a rest stop, scowling as a young baby crawls towards him with a smile. The samurai wears a striped kimono, one sword resting against his shoulder, and his geta clogs are carefully hung up behind him on the outside of the palanquin. Above, Hiroshige shows travelers making their way up the steep hill at Shirasuga, with a fine panoramic view of Shiomizaka below. Waves roll along the shore and white sails dot the sea in the distance. A great design from this collaborative Tokaido series.
