Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

The Two Brushes Tokaido - Between 1855 and 1857, Hiroshige and Kunisada collaborated on a series known as the "Two Brushes Tokaido." The upper portion of each print features a landscape view of the station by Hiroshige, with Kunisada contributing the large figures below. The scenes include travelers and workers along this famed route, characters from myth and legend, and kabuki actors. The series includes 55 designs, comprising each of the 53 stations plus the starting point, Nihonbashi, and the ending point, Kyoto. These attractive designs are beautifully printed, with soft bokashi shading in the landscapes, and fine line work in the figures and clothing. An interesting complement to Hiroshige's more well-known Tokaido series.

Tsuchiyama: Onoe Kikugoro III as Shirai Gonpachi, 1855 - Dramatic kabuki scene of Onoe Kikugoro III appears as the robber and murderer Shirai Gonpachi, escaping from an enclosed palanquin while being transported by police. Having cut through the netting with the knife now clenched between his teeth, he begins to emerge from his captivity, extending one foot and an elbow out of the palanquin. The fantastic landscape inset by Hiroshige shows Tsuchiyama at night during a driving rainstorm. Travelers make their way up a hill under the slanting raindrops as the river cascades down the hillside. A great print, beautifully detailed and finely shaded.
