Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Yoshitsune's Thousand Cherry Trees" (Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura). Minamoto no Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Tadanobu has been accompanying Yoshitsune's sweetheart, Lady Shizuka, as she travels. The pair stops beneath a cherry tree for a rest, enacting a dance with Shizuka tapping out a rhythm on a hand drum Yoshitsune gave her when they parted. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder while Tadanobu kneels on the ground, waving his fan above his head as he frowns angrily. From left, the actors are and Onoe Eizaburo and Nakamura Gonjuro. This appears to be some early form of mechanical printing, but we are not sure what printing method was used. Nevertheless, a handsome design.
