Comments - Handsome group portrait of heroes from the Bakamatsu period in Japan, the years between 1853 and 1867 when Japan was opened to Westerners and transitioning from the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Meiji government and restoration of the emperor. Many of the men wear western-style uniforms and caps or plumed hats, while some samurai are dressed in full armor. A few wear traditional kimono and hakama pants. At upper left, a warrior carries a gun over his shoulder while the man next to him carries a standard with writing on it. A fascinating historical subject, with expressive and colorful figures, detailed with burnishing on the black uniforms.
