Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Hojo Yasutoki on the Grounds of the Imperial Palace, 1879 - Handsome portrait of the thirteenth-century warrior Hojo Yasutoki sitting on a folding stool on the grounds of the Imperial Palace. Yasutoki served as the third regent of the Kamakura Shogunate, and was known for enacting the shogunate's legal code. He is shown dressed in armor, a quiver of arrows at his back, surrounded by kneeling retainers. A white banner flutters in the breeze, next to the purple draperies hanging from the roofline of the palace. Wonderful architectural detail in the setting and soft shading on the sky and ground.
