Series; An Unofficial History of Japan

Emperor Go-Daigo and His General Kusunoki Masashige, 1877 - Handsome scene showing the exiled Emperor Go-Daigo in conference with his general Kusunoki Masashige at a temporary encampment in the woods. The emperor stands at right dressed in elegant court robes and a tall cap, with retainers gathered around him. A fine palanquin waits behind the group, topped with the phoenix emblem of the emperor. Kusunoki kneels at left, looking up with eyes wide. Later, Kusunoki will lead his men into the Battle of Minatogawa at the emperor's order, knowing that his side faced superior forces and almost certain death. Badly defeated, Kusunoki and his remaining men committed suicide rather than face capture. Kusunoki is remembered for his extreme loyalty and self-sacrifice, and a monument to him stands outside the Imperial Palace. A terrific design with the forest setting and dark night sky creating an atmospheric mood.
