The Earth Spider (Tsuchigumo), 1843

Comments - Terrific scene from the story of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and the tsuchigumo or earth spider. Raiko fell ill with a fever and dreamed of an earth spider preparing to cast a web over him. He struck at it with his sword and immediately recovered from his fever. Here, two of Raiko's loyal retainers play a game of go as they keep watch in Raiko's bedroom, while the huge spider appears in the darkness behind them. The samurai are engrossed in the game, leaning over the board with intent expressions, unaware of the enormous creature with giant eyes looming above them. A great supernatural subject and a fantastic illustration of this legendary tale.
