Prince Genji with Girls' Day and Doll Festival Display, 1861

Comments - Fantastic design of Prince Genji and his companions celebrating Girls' Day with refreshments and an elaborate display for the Doll Festival. Traditionally, Girls' Day involved praying for the health and happiness of daughters as well as the display of hina dolls at the homes of Japanese girls. Here, a large tiered display holds rows of dolls representing the Emperor and Empress and court musicians playing drums and flute, along with offerings. The stand is covered with a red and yellow floral cloth, and a vase at right holds a blossoming cherry branch and orange flowers. A young girl holds a black lacquer hand mirror as she stands before the display, looking back over her shoulder. In the center, the prince grins happily at the beauties seated on the floor, one drinking from a glass goblet and the other holding a kettle. Behind them, a woman carries in a tray piled high with sweets. Beautifully detailed with lively color and touches of burnishing and light embossing. A great choice for a collector interested in traditional Japanese celebrations.
