Comments - Fantastic illustration from the childhood of the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Then known as Onozoshi Ushiwakamaro, the boy sits in the middle of the Yahagi Bridge, demanding a toll from a gang of robbers trying to pass. At left, the leader of the rogues, Ise Saburo Yoshimori, glares at him angrily as a henchmen shines a lantern across the bridge, a shaft of light illuminating the night sky. Another thief crouches behind him, scowling as he examines the child. The ruffians are armed with an impressive array of weapons, including pole arms, swords, an enormous hatchet, and a giant wooden mallet. Fantastic detail in the dress and weapons, along with expressive faces. A terrific illustration of this legendary event with beautiful shading and handling of the light.
