47 Ronin, Act 6: Kampei’s Suicide, circa 1835 - 1839 - Handsome illustration of Act 6 from the classic tale of the 47 ronin, the "Chushingura." Here, hunters are returning after bringing the body of the murdered Yoichibei to his cottage. They cross an earth-covered bridge as they leave, weeping and wiping their eyes over the loss of their friend. At right, two of Yuranosuke's retainers have arrived at the house to return the money that Kampei gave them to join the vendetta. Believing that he has accidentally killed his father-in-law while hunting the previous night, Kampei decides to commit suicide, only to learn that he has shot the villain Sadakuro instead. With his last breath he is able to sign the covenant and become an honorable member of the vendetta. An unusual depiction of this scene, which more typically shows Kampei inside the cottage or his wife, Okaru, being carried away in a palanquin. Nicely detailed. Also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
