Series; Customs of the East

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

The Entangled Kite String - A beautiful Kiyonaga design depicting a young woman, sometimes described as the "townsman's wife," walking on a windy day. She is accompanied by a young maid carrying an umbrella. A little boy has caught the maid's foot with his kite string and appears afraid that the kite string might break, hurrying to catch up with her. A charming design from Kiyonaga's "Customs of the East" series, which focuses on scenes of women and children in daily life.
