The Cat Witch of Okazaki Village by Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874)

Original Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Cat Witch of Okazaki Village

Comments - Incredible scene from the famous tale of the cat witch of Okabe. An old witch haunted the temple near Okabe, assuming the form of an enormous cat waiting to attack young women who came to visit the temple. Here, the hideous crone crouches atop a chest at the right. Usugomo stares over her shoulder with a dismayed expression as the samurai in the left, Inabanosuke, grabs his sword. At center, the giant cat monster peers through a tattered blind behind them, snarling in the gloom of the ruined temple. A fantastic image from this legendary story, with the fearsome cat masterfully drawn. A terrific choice for a collector interested in Japanese ghost stories.

Artist - Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A vertical crease at center. Backed with old paper. A number of small holes repaired. Slightly curled. Some light soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
