Original Toshikata (1866 - 1908) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Truce Flagbearer, 1895

Comments - Intriguing image from the Sino-Japanese War of a Chinese man carrying a white flag of truce as he approaches the open ground. Shots streak across the sky, hitting one of the Chinese and knocking him backwards while a third man crouches behind the flagbearer, his hand thrown out in alarm. A Japanese general waits astride a white horse at left, a bugler sounding a call beside him. The figure on horseback at far left appears to be a civilian, perhaps a reporter, dressed in a plaid coat with a fur collar. A fascinating subject with fine bokashi shading, touches of burnishing, and delicate cloth embossing in the white flag.

Artist - Toshikata (1866 - 1908)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Paper remnants on reverse at corners from previous mounting. Thinning at one corner, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
