Kiyotomo (active circa 1720 - 1740) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Courtesan and Kamuro on New Year's Day

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Attractive image of a courtesan and her young kamuro or child apprentice on New Year's Day. The beauty relaxes on a bench with a pipe, a traditional holiday decoration of pine and bamboo behind her. The girl carries a battledore for a game similar to badminton. Nicely detailed with faint embossing on the black obi. A handsome design from the early years of hand-colored lacquer prints. Printed on light tan paper to simulate an aged appearance.

Artist - Kiyotomo (active circa 1720 - 1740)

Image Size - 13" x 6 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small spot. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
